Real Madrid – La Liga Shone in Pamplona last season
A year ago, Martin Odegaard was a player on the rise. Real Sociedad were enjoying his best spell as a footballer to date, and he was starring for the Basque side.
Now, that seems a distant memory. The player once praised for his dynamism and freshness has struggled to find a place in Zinedine Zidane‘s plans.
He began the 2020/21 season as a starter, but as games have passed the debate has disappeared. Luka Modric is untouchable in midfield, and the Norwegian is the backup option.
However, it’s clear that Zidane can do the same thing with Odegaard that he did with Marco Asensio, and he still has an important part to play, which is being seen now.
With games stacking up already, Odegaard could be a lifeline for Real Madrid.
That starts in Pamplona on Saturday evening. On December 22, 2019, Odegaard put in a memorable performance for La Real away to Osasuna, perhaps his best of all in LaLiga Santander. He scored and assisted, and delivered the kind of performance that attacking midfielders dream of.
By January 8, 2020, he had played 17 LaLiga Santander matches, he had four goals and provided five assists, with 1,530 minutes behind him. By the same date in 2021, he has played in just seven matches, starting three, and accumulated just 232 minutes.
When Odegaard has played, he hasn’t looked like the player he was last season. Injuries haven’t helped his cause though, and the games he’s been available for have been limited.
The reality is that, this season, he hasn’t been at his best. He’s suffered disappointment at club level, but also with his national team, failing to make it to the European Championship.
