Real Madrid – La Liga Was just two minutes
The Real Madrid players returned to Valdebebas on Thursday morning for their first training session since the Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of Alcoyano, where they lost 2-1 to the Segunda B side after extra time.
Several players surely expected a rollocking from Zinedine Zidane. Some even wanted harsh words from their leader.
However, the coach’s talk with his group of players wasn’t more than two minutes and followed a similar line to what he said in his post-match press conference on Wednesday night, when he insisted that the loss wasn’t disgraceful and that such things happen.
“We can all do a little more,” was his message as he called for unity as Los Blancos try to turn their situation around.
While the squad know that Zidane isn’t one to crack the whip, some felt that this Thursday was the day for it. There was surprise.
The dressing room chemistry isn’t what is used to be. The players have found a more distant Zidane since he returned for a second stint.
Those are aren’t playing often, or almost not at all, aren’t happy and that’s no secret. Even those who are playing almost all the time don’t understand some of the decisions.
From starting the season with Marvin Park and Sergio Arribas getting minutes against Real Sociedad, Zidane quickly reached a point where he was only using a group of around 14 players. That left some scratching heads.
The change in mood was seen with the footage shown by ‘El Chiringuito’, in which Zidane hardly spoke to his players in the few minutes between the end of normal time and the start of extra time in Alcoy.
He did speak to his players on Thursday at training, but even that message wasn’t what most expected after such a historic and embarrassing elimination.
