Opinion – Real Madrid The opinion of Carlos Carpio
There’s a good chance that Real Madrid will sign one of the two young forwards of the future this summer – one of Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland. There will be elections in July and it looks like Vicente Boluda will stand, so Florentino Perez knows that a big signing would be the best guarantee of re-election, even more so if this becomes a trophyless season. It has been clear for three years now that the signing Real Madrid need is a goalscorer. They can’t let such a player pass by this time.
Zinedine Zidane‘s side will survive as they can until then with Karim Benzema‘s goals. He currently has 17 for the season. They’ll also be boosted by the best midfield trio of Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. For as long as their legs keep up with them, they bring reliability, precision, passing and distribution. Football is becoming more and more about intensity, but that’ll never match the excellence of Kroos or the improvised solutions that Modric‘s talent can produce. If their good play is combined with a good run of form from Benzema then Real Madrid can compete.
Yet they still need more goals than that because Marco Asensio and Vinicius still don’t score enough. And let’s not even get into the Eden Hazard situation… To add a goalscorer of the level of Mbappe or Haaland to the quartet of Casemiro, Kroos, Modric and Benzema would make this a formidable team that could aspire to win the Champions League. Right now, Real Madrid are not that.
