Real Madrid’s directors know that work must be done in the summer to fix this squad that isn’t performing to the expected level. There are several positions that could be strengthened and one of them is that of left-back.

Even though Marcelo‘s contract runs until 2022, he is expected to depart.

Then, Ferland Mendy needs to convince the decision-makers over the remainder of the season after his stuttering form. He arrived at Zinedine Zidane‘s request in the summer of 2019 and has become the starter ahead of Marcelo, but there are still question marks.

Looking at the possible left-back options for next season, Sergio Reguilon‘s name will be there. He was purchased by Tottenham in the summer, but a buy-back option was included in the Spaniard’s deal.

He could be brought back for 45 million euros, or 10m euros more than Spurs paid for him.

That option isn’t on the table right now, although a lot will depend on who the Real Madrid coach is going into next season.

Real Madrid’s options with Alaba

Looking at the academy, there are two players whose stock has been rising.

One is Fran Garcia, the full-back who is currently on loan at Rayo Vallecano and who is doing well there. Even though he is currently playing in the second division, he is convincing the Real Madrid hierarchy and could be an option for next season.

The other is Miguel Gutierrez, one of the jewels of the academy and a player who has featured for Spain’s national teams at all the youth levels. Currently at Castilla, his versatility is a useful attribute as he can play in other positions.

Real Madrid will want to have two left-backs in the first-team squad next season as they aim to have a good 2021/22, but it’s unclear exactly who these two players will be.
