Richard Arnold & John Murtough spotted in Barcelona amid Man Utd interest in Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough have been spotted in Barcelona amid transfer interest in Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

United have made De Jong their primary summer transfer target, and while they have agreed a base fee with Barcelona for the transfer of the 25-year-old, the deal has stalled in recent weeks due to Barcelona owing Β£17m in deferred wages to the player, after he agreed to such measures during the COVID pandemic.

90min outlined the issues holding the deal up on Monday, and established that despite reports to the contrary in recent days, De Jong is still open to moving to Old Trafford.

Suggestions a deal is still being worked on have had a very public boost on Monday afternoon, as images of Murtough and Arnold meeting Barcelona officials emerged on social media.

Jordi Cruyff, a former United player newly appointed in a strategic role behind the scenes at Barcelona earlier in 2022, was believed to be present, along with director of football Mateu Alemany and vice president Rafa Yuste.

The meeting party were spotted after a conversation at the Barcelona offices, with De Jong’s transfer presumably the topic of conversation – given no other negotiations between the two clubs are known of at present.

De Jong reported back to pre-season training with Barcelona on Monday with his future still the subject of scrutiny. Barcelona are looking to resolve the future of De Jong this week, with the club also looking to solidify deals for a number of their own transfer targets.
