Roy Keane warns Marcus Rashford has been ‘left behind’ by Anthony Elanga

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has warned that Marcus Rashford has been ‘left behind’, suggesting the 24-year-old has lost his ‘hunger’ compared to emerging youngster Anthony Elanga.

Elanga has been a firm favourite under the leadership of interim manager Ralf Rangnick in recent months, becoming a regular starter in 2022. Rashford, on the other hand, has only started six Premier League games this calendar and managing 90 minutes only once in that time.

Having been poor against both Chelsea and Liverpool in his last two starts, Rashford was left on the bench for the visit of Brentford on Monday night. His performances on the whole this season have been devoid of confidence and he is on course to record his lowest ever goal tally.

The player is no longer doing the basics that previously made him so effective and yielded successive 20+ goal seasons for United in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Rashford has stopped running in behind. He’s certainly short on confidence. We’ve seen his quality before but we’ve not seen it for a year or two now,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“He’s taken his eye off the ball with all the off-field stuff, and that’s why I keep an eye on my young players all the time. Rashford’s been around for a few years now and he’s got that experience, he’s played international football,” Keane continued.

“He doesn’t mix his game up enough. He doesn’t look like he’s matured. We’ve seen a few games recently where, even when he’s playing at Liverpool, he played like a child.”

Listen now to 90min’s Manchester United podcast, The Promised Land, with Scott Saunders & Rob Blanchette. On this week’s show they discuss Ralf Rangnick’s new role as Austria coach and whether the club should build around Cristiano Ronaldo.

Keane suggested Rashford has not ‘learned’, adding: “He’s just drifting. He’s lost the hunger – these young players get a lot of money and good luck to them but he’s lost the eye of the tiger and he’s struggling to get it back. Wherever Man United want to go, Marcus has been left behind.

“He’s got to get the hunger back into his game and make runs like we’ve seen from young Elanga. Players like him are a bit more innocent, and hungry to succeed. Rashford has lost that bit of hunger, which is huge for a player. He’s a talent but we’re not seeing it.”
