Ryan Sessegnon hopes Antonio Conte can ‘kickstart’ his Spurs career

Ryan Sessegnon says he is hopeful Antonio Conte’s arrival as Tottenham manager can help him kickstart his career.

The 21-year-old was seen as one of English football’s brightest prospects during his time at Fulham which earned him a move to Spurs, but injuries and a lack of opportunities have seen his stock fall.

Prior to his substitute appearance against Leeds at the weekend, the only games Sessegnon had played in this season were the two Europa Conference League qualifiers against Pacos de Ferreira.

However, with a wing-back system now in place under his new Italian coach, Sessegnon believes he can crack on and make an impact.

He said: “For me it’s massive, you say to really kickstart your career as it has been stop-start since I’ve been at the club. It’s a big opportunity and I’m looking forward to it.

“When I was at Fulham I was young and playing every game. In football things don’t always go your way, ups and downs in your career. This could be a chance to kickstart my career. I’m just looking forward to the future now.

“We do a lot of tactics work on he pitch. It’s very clear. The physical side we have done a lot of running”

When asked if he thought he’d had to leave Tottenham, Sessegnon added: “Never, it never crossed my mind…never did it cross my mind that I thought I’d have to leave the club permanently.

“It’s been tough [injuries]. It’s a time now when I can really kick on and show what I can do.”

Sessegnon made 12 appearances during the 2019/20 season for Spurs, scoring his first goal for the club in a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich. Last term he went out on loan to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, where he impressed in patches with two goals in 23 league games.

Tottenham face Mura on Thursday in the Conference League, where they could qualify for the knockout stages if they win and Rennes beat Vitesse.
