Barcelona have confirmed that centre-back Samuel Umtiti will undergo surgery after suffering a foot injury in a training session on Monday.
Umtiti’s time with Barça has been blighted by a series of injuries and he has not made more than 18 appearances in a season since the 2017/18 campaign.

The Frenchman has featured just one for the Blaugrana this term – completing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw at Osasuna in December – but he’s now set for another spell on the sidelines.
A statement from the club read: “The first team player Samuel Umtiti took a blow to his right foot in training on Monday and has fractured his fifth metatarsal bone. The player will undergo surgery on Tuesday with Doctor Antoni Dalmau and with the Club’s medical services supervising. Another press release will be issued when the surgery has taken place.”
No timescale has yet been put on Umtiti’s injury or when he could return.
Umtiti recently signed a new contract with Barcelona, reducing his wage but extending his deal by another year to make up for this lost salary.
The deal was largely ridiculed due to Umtiti’s status as a fringe player that Barça have been trying to shift for years, but it was necessary in order for the club to register new signing Ferran Torres.
The Spain forward made his debut in Barcelona’s 3-2 Spanish Super Cup loss to Real Madrid last week.
Barcelona are next in action on Thursday evening, making the trip to Bilbao to face Athletic Club in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.
