San Diego Wave announce Abby Dahlkemper as first official signing

New NWSL expansion team San Diego Wave FC acquired Abby Dahlkemper from the North Carolina Courage on Monday. The Courage will receive $190,000 in allocation money and San Diego’s natural first-round draft pick in 2023 in the deal.

She becomes the Wave’s first official player as they prepare to debut in the 2022 season.

“Abby is one of the best center-backs in the world and a proven winner at club and international level. We look forward to welcoming her to San Diego and our club,” team president Jill Ellis said.

Dahlkemper finished the 2021 with Houston after North Carolina traded the 28-year old player to the Dash for $25,000 in allocation money as the first part of the three-way trade. Prior to the jump, she played with the Courage for five seasons, where she won three NWSL Shields and three NWSL championships.

The player has also played with the US women’s national team since 2016, and recorded the most minutes out of any player during the triumphant 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in France.

“I’ve followed Abby’s career for a long time and always admired her qualities as a center-back,” Wave FC head coach Casey Stoney said.

“She’s had a stellar career with the United States and in NWSL, and I coached against her last year when she was playing in England. She’s a top player who I feel has a lot to offer any team on the field and in the locker room. Those qualities will be of great value to our club as we build a team to be competitive in this league. I look forward to working with her on a daily basis.”

The team is set to play their debut season in its temporary home, Torero Stadium. The club revealed their crest and permanent venue will be announced at a later date.

The Wave joins the league alongside Angel City FC.
