Competition: World Cup qualifying
Market: Serbia win
Odds: 11/10 @ 888sport
Looking to only pile more pressure onto Ireland in midweek, Serbia will make the trip to Dublin on Tuesday night as they look to build off of their thumping weekend display.
Starting with the hosts, while Ireland might have been handed a golden chance to pick up their first competitive win under Stephen Kenny on Saturday, it was more frustration for the former Dundalk boss. Having to watch Shane Duffy snatch them a late point in Dublin, the Greens were held to a worrying 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan on home soil. Failing to find a way to bounce back from their stunning late heartbreak out in Portugal last week, Ireland are in the midst of what has become an extended nightmare. Knowing that they now probably need a minor miracle if they’re to somehow book a spot at next year’s World Cup finals, Kenny’s men have collected just a single point from any of their four qualifying contests. Opening up their Group A campaign with a 3-2 defeat against their midweek guests, the Greens could face another stern test here.
As for the visitors, while Ireland might find themselves in the midst of a qualifying nightmare, Serbia should find the mood in their camp at a real high. Finding a route to the top of Group A, ahead of former European champions Portugal, the Eagles were last seen over the weekend picking up a routine 4-1 romp against Luxembourg thanks to a brace from Fulham marksman, Aleksandar Mitrović. Opening up their September international schedule with a 4-0 win against Qatar in a friendly showdown, Head Coach Dragan Stojković should be smelling a real chance in Dublin to lay down another marker on foreign soil. Picking up that action-packed 3-2 win when the two nations last faced off back in March, we’re back a similar away victory here.
