Australian Open Following questions about her future
Serena Williams lost to Naomi Osaka in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, which led some journalists to ask about the 39-year-old’s future in tennis.
Williams had waved goodbye to the crowd at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne with her hand on her heart, after losing 6-3 6-4 to Osaka.
“I don’t know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn’t tell anyone. So…” Williams said when asked if this might have been her last appearance at the Australian Open, which is where she has won seven of her 23 Grand Slam titles.
“I don’t know. I’m done,” Williams then responded amidst tears to a simple question about unforced errors, before walking out the room.
Williams later posted a message on Instagram for her fans.
“Melbourne and my Australian fans – Today was not ideal outcome or performance but it happens… I am so honoured to be able to play in front of you all,” it read.
“Your support – your cheers, I only wish I could have done better for you today. I am forever in debt and grateful to each and everyone single one of you.
“I love you. I love you. I love you. I adore you.”
