Atletico Madrid 2-2 Celta Conceded late equaliser
Diego Simeone remained upbeat following Atletico Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo at the Wanda Metropolitano on Monday night.
After Santi Mina‘s early opener, Luis Suarez‘s double had seen the hosts take the lead in the second half before Facundo Ferreyra netted a late equaliser for Celta.
“To be honest, I’m leaving here with lots of positives,” Simeone told the press afterwards.
“The second halves from [Renan] Lodi, [Geoffrey] Kondogbia, [Lucas] Torreira… the performance of [Angel] Correa… They are very important things looking to the future.
“It was a tough start to the game, they played very well. Neither team had many chances. We improved with the change of system in the second half, with Torreira and Kondogbia winning the ball back.
“The draw was fair. We didn’t deserve our goal in the first half and they didn’t deserve their equaliser.”
Hours before kick off, it was revealed that Hector Herrera and Thomas Lemar had become the latest Atletico players to test positive for coronavirus.
“We’re in a very difficult time for society, with lots of complications,” Simeone added. “The cases aren’t just at Atletico.
“We still have players [available] that can contribute and they’re not used to playing. Let’s hope we get the boys back soon. Look at what is happening in society – Atletico are part of society.”
Given the growing number of cases within the Atletico squad, is the situation having an effect on the players?
“You have to ask them,” Simeone responded. “We did a Zoom to prepare for the game. We gathered at 19:15.
“The reaction in the second half means that we’re leaving here with lots of positives.”
