Southampton 1-0 Arsenal – FA Cup Arsenal fail to reach last 16
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were unimpressive as Southampton halted their defence of the FA Cup before even reaching the last 16.
There was a stroke of fortune about the home side’s winner, but it was nonetheless deserved.
Kyle Walker-Peters‘ driven cross was deflected into his own net by Gabriel in the 24th minute after he received the ball on the right from James Ward-Prowse.
Arsenal offered slightly more attacking threat in the second half, with Fraser Forster doing well to deny Nketiah, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a second cup exit of the season.
In the hunt for Europe, the FA Cup offered a big opportunity for Arsenal who now sit 10th in the Premier League.
The league and Europa League just became more important for Arteta, who is waiting on the arrival of Martin Odegaard to bolster his side for the remainder of the season.
