Roy Keane, Neil Lennon and Jack Lester were all considered, but Forest have decided upon Cooper. 90min understands the Welshman is finalising his backroom staff and is set to be in attendance at the John Smith’s Stadium when his new side travel to face Huddersfield in the league on Saturday afternoon.
Cooper has been out of work since leaving Swansea by mutual consent in July having guided the Welsh club to the playoff final in 2020/21, where they were beaten by Brentford at Wembley.
The 41-year-old had been strongly linked with the vacant managerial role at Crystal Palace in the Premier League during the summer before Patrick Vieira was appointed. The compensation fee of £3m became a stumbling block for the Eagles, and Swansea still require payment despite Cooper’s departure because he is technically on gardening leave.
However, sources have informed 90min that Nottingham Forest managed to negotiate that fee down to £2m and Swansea have accepted.
Cooper has plenty of work to do in the City Ground dugout, with Forest rooted to the foot of the Championship table having collecting just a single point so far this campaign and boasting a record of four defeats in the last five.
