FC Barcelona – La Liga Struggled past lowly opposition

The Barcelona losers from Cornella

Barcelona laboured in their elimination of Cornella in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.

Ronald Koeman’s side were not impressive against their third-tier opponents, who took them all the way to extra time.

It wasn’t until Martin Braithwaite‘s goal in the 120th minute, once Cornella had gone down to 10 men, that Barcelona could be sure of progression.

So, who didn’t pull their weight for the Blaugrana on the night? We’ve looked at the players who will be disappointed with their displays.

The Frenchman has not been at his best for much of this season. Having problems with and without the ball, he’s not assumed the role of defensive leader in Gerard Pique‘s absence. Youngster Ronald Araujo has instead.

The former Real Betis man still looks lost in a Blaugrana shirt. He’s never been able to set in at Barcelona and has got nowhere near competing with Jordi Alba for a spot at left-back.

The Bosnian arrived at the Camp Nou looking to force his way into the starting line-up but he’s been way off that goal. He was expected to contribute goals but he’s been unable to do so, missing a penalty against Cornella.

Despite being one of the best players in the first half, the academy graduate was hooked by Ronald Koeman at half time. The explanation was that Puig had received a yellow card but it’s clear that coach and player don’t get on.

No one can deny that he gives everything in every match he plays but the problem for Griezmann is that this still isn’t enough to succeed at Barcelona. He was expected to make the difference against Cornella but didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.

Although his goal settled the tie in extra time, the Dane is still yet to prove he can be a hit at Barcelona in the long term. He looked detached against Cornella and missed various clear chances to score before his goal.

There’s not been much from the Portuguese international to suggest that he was worth the 31 million euros Barcelona paid Braga to sign him. He wasn’t able to shine in this Copa del Rey tie and is yet to score for his new club.
