The details of Messi's last renewal in 2017

Lionel Messi‘s future is very much up in the air, and that the Argentine has been keen to leave Barcelona hasn’t been kept secret.

The captain’s contract expires at the end of the current season, meaning he could walk away from the Camp Nou on a free transfer.

La Vanguardia have published details of his last renewal, which came in 2017, which shows the bonuses he received on top of his sizeable salary.

As well as agreeing an increase of around 100 million euros to his salary, two additional bonuses were also in place that amounted to 78 million euros. These were to be paid in two instalments of 39 million euros, though they were delayed a number of times.

The first of those was only paid last July. The second, meanwhile, is scheduled to start at the end of the 2020/21 season, and will be paid in eight parts across four years, meaning they will end in 2025.

The player and his representatives didn’t complain about the postponement of the payments.
