Blackburn Rovers hitman Ben Brereton Diaz has ended Aleksandar Mitrovic’s reign of dominance in this season’s PFA Vertu Motors Championship Fans’ Player of the Month awards.
Fulham striker Mitrovic had claimed the prize in September, October and November, but the Championship’s top scorer has finally been usurped by his nearest challenger in the goalscoring charts.

Stoke-born Chile international Brereton Diaz enjoyed a fantastic December as Rovers won four matches on the spin and stretched their winning streak to six games overall.
Four goals in those four games took his tally for the season to 20 in the league alone. Not bad going.
The 22-year-old started the month with the winner in the 1-0 Lancashire derby victory over Preston North End, expertly meeting a cross at the near post and sending a header flashing into the back of the net.
Brereton Diaz followed that up with a brace against Birmingham in the build-up to Christmas before completing 2021 with another match-winning display against Barnsley – popping up with a well-taken finish across the goalkeeper to seal a 2-1 success.
Blackburn‘s 100% record in December – including a crucial win over promotion rivals Bournemouth – lifted them to third in the Championship table, well in contention for an automatic promotion place as they target a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
Brereton Diaz secured a comfortable victory in the poll for Fans’ Player of the Month, taking more than 35% of the vote. His nearest challenger was Derby County veteran Colin Kazim-Richards on 22.75%, while the Cherries’ Dominic Solanke finished with just over 17%.
Mitrovic – the winner of the award in the previous three months of the season – did not make the shortlist on this occasion.
