The winner of the PFA Vertu Motors League One Fans’ Player of the Month – December

Ipswich Town forward James Norwood has been voted the PFA Vertu Motors League One Fans’ Player of the Month for December.

Norwood grabbed three goals in three games throughout the month – a remarkable turnaround considering he had barely featured this season.

The striker was transfer-listed by former Ipswich boss Paul Cook before he departed at the start of December and was replaced by Kieran McKenna. The former Man Utd coach’s arrival heralded Norwood’s reintroduction to the first team.

Norwood’s form was outstanding as he scored in three consecutive big matches for the Tractor Boys – including his first start of the season.

His first strike was a late crucial equaliser off the bench in the 1-1 draw at Wigan, and he followed that up with the opener in the home clash against promotion-chasing Sunderland – a game that also ended 1-1.

Norwood finished off the year with the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over high-flying Wycombe at Portman Road.

McKenna was clearly delighted with Norwood’s form and evidently he was not the only one who was impressed as he also caught the attention of the League One fans. The 31-year-old took nearly 30% of the vote with 2,266, but it was a close run thing as he finished fewer than 200 votes ahead of Sunderland’s in-form Ross Stewart.

Indeed, Norwood and Stewart dominated as they took more than 50% of the vote, pushing Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu – who is enjoying a brilliant campaign at Portsmouth on loan from Manchester City – into third spot after he garnered just shy of 15% with 1,156 votes.

Shewsbury’s Nigerian ace Daniel Udoh came fourth after receiving just over 1,000 votes. Bazunu’s teammate Connor Ogilvie came in fifth with Oxford’s Matty Taylor in sixth after both picked up just over 8% of the votes cast.
