Thibaut Courtois & Federico Valverde cleared to return against Getafe

La Liga have cleared both Thibaut Courtois and Federico Valverde to return to action in Real Madrid’s meeting with Getafe on Sunday.

The pair both returned positive Covid-19 tests on Wednesday alongside Eduardo Camavinga and Vinicius Junior, but all apart from the Brazilian winger have since tested negative and were awaiting clearance to return to action.

According to Marca, they’ve got it. Courtois and Valverde are now free to play, and Camavinga would have been had he not been suspended for this game.

For Courtois, the belief is that his test was a false positive. He is fully vaccinated and did not complain of any symptoms, and he submitted two negative tests in the two days that followed his initial positive.

Whether Valverde and Camavinga were both actually positive or not is unclear, but the important thing is that they have both tested negative and can now focus on playing again.

As it stands, striker Luka Jovic is the only definitive positive in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. AS note that Vinicius actually tested negative on Friday and is hopeful of returning to training on Saturday if he can submit a second negative test.

Even if he does make it back in time, it is unlikely that Vinicius would start Sunday’s game, having missed almost a week of training.

Should Vinicius remain with Jovic on the sidelines, Ancelotti would be a little short on numbers in attack. Hitman Karim Benzema is free to start but there are obvious doubts over who would play alongside him.

Eden Hazard may get a rare chance to return to his favoured left wing, while Rodrygo Goes could start on the right after Covid-19 brought his 2021 to an abrupt end.

Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale are both available for Real as well after their own spells out with the virus, but just how fit they are remains to be seen.
