Thomas Tuchel reveals how Chelsea got the better of Juventus

Thomas Tuchel has revealed the tactical adjustments that allowed Chelsea to beat Juventus 4-0 on Tuesday night.

The Blues have leapfrogged Juve in the standings and secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with one game to spare.

Chelsea lost 1-0 to Juventus in the reverse fixture but have been imperious since, and Tuchel told BT Sport how he set his side up to ensure they weren’t beaten again.

“We wanted to stay patient but we did not want to fall asleep,” he began. “That was the challenge – be patient but constantly increase the rhythm and intensity. The team did very well. It’s so tough to score goals, create chances, and we scored so many and created so much.

“It was different behaviour from us [than in Turin]. we were sharper, more determined, took more risks in the areas of the pitch where it’s necessary to take risks.

“That increased the rhythm and intensity and we lacked that in Turin, we had control but could not hurt them and by pure control you cannot hurt Juventus – you need to penetrate with runs off the ball and then it’s a mix between patience and acceleration of the game.”

Tuchel’s Chelsea have conceded just 24 goals in his 50 games in charge, though he again dismissed notions that they are a defensive team.

“It’s not like it’s not written over the manager’s office – ‘defence is what counts’. It’s just part of the game, a huge part of the game, and sometimes defence is the best way to get control of games,” he added.

“This is what we do very good. We do the invisible work, we’re very disciplined. When we dig in we really defend.”

Tuchel also revealed that Ben Chilwell and N’Golo Kante will be assessed on Wednesday after being withdrawn with injuries.
