Real Madrid were true to their style and history by fighting for the LaLiga Santander title until the very last minute of the season, and Zinedine Zidane‘s players deserve applause for that.
They played poorly on Saturday, particularly in the first half against Villarreal, but they did their job in the second and managed a late comeback thanks to goals from two of their best players this season – Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.
It wasn’t Zidane‘s finest day, though. The Real Madrid boss made strange decisions. Why did the Nacho Fernandez–Eder Militao partnership get broken up? Why opt for Marcelo and Isco off the bench?
Real Madrid have had a lot of problems this season and Zidane‘s work has been close to excellent but he sometimes leaves unanswered questions, and his defensive selection choices are the best example of that.
The season has drawn to a close and a period of reflection begins, but it’s clear that another season like this one won’t be accepted at Real Madrid.
Nacho didn’t deserve to be dropped
Real Madrid ended the season with Militao and Raphael Varane at centre-back, with Nacho falling out of the XI to accommodate the Frenchman, but the Spaniard didn’t deserve to be replaced. It was a strange decision.
Zidane had his head turned by Varane and chose him over the more deserving Nacho. At least Sergio Ramos didn’t play…
Villarreal are in form ahead of the Europa League final!
Everyone was expecting a B or C team to play at Valdebebas, but Unai Emery went at Real Madrid with a strong selection.
They impressed in the first half against a hungry Real Madrid and they could cause Manchester United some problems if they’re at their best as well. Fingers will be crossed.
Another big minute for Real Madrid
With Los Blancos a goal behind and Atletico Madrid in the same position, Benzema looked to have levelled. But VAR intervened and showed the No.9 to be offside, cancelling out the goal as Angel Correa scored for Los Rojiblancos.
This year, luck wasn’t on Real Madrid‘s side.
Applause for Marcelo, Isco…
It appears to be the end of an era at Real Madrid, with a lot of big names expected to leave this summer. Marcelo and Isco might be two of those, with neither being important players for Zidane this season.
Zidane gave them the chance to play the final few minutes of the season, which was more than their performances this season deserved.
Benzema ends the season with a great goal
Benzema is the man for big moments and he showed that again, scoring a fine goal despite not having his best day. The goal was chalked off, but he got another that stood later on.
Now, he’s ready to win with France at the European Championship…
