Toronto FC already looking toward 2023 MLS season – Jayden Nelson

Toronto FC head into their final two matches of the 2022 MLS season against Inter Miami and the Philadelphia Union with sights already set on the next campaign.

The Reds sit 13th in the Eastern Conference and have already been eliminated from MLS Cup Playoffs contention.

However, there’s plenty of reason for optimism, not least because of the form of their Italian attacking duo of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, who have 14 goals and four assists combined in MLS since joining TFC over the summer.

There are still defensive issues to figure out, but work has already begun on making sure Toronto are competing for top honors in 2023.

“[It’s about] trying to build on what we’ve been working on and just trying to do it better,” said young forward Jayden Nelson. “It’s more looking towards the next season than now, so we’re just building… trying to work hard and get better.”

All of that said, TFC still have a duty to perform in their final two matches. Inter Miami remain in the hunt for a Playoffs spot and the Union are battling fiercely against LAFC for the Supporters’ Shield title.

What’s more, Toronto supporters will still be turning up in strong numbers expecting the likes of Insigne and Bernardeschi to put on a show, helping build their own optimism for 2023.

“Every time we step on the field we want to win, and doing it in front of our fans we obviously want to get three points in front of them,” said Nelson. “Especially at the last [home] game of the season.”
