Toronto FC parts ways with general manager Ali Curtis

Toronto FC have parted ways with general manager and senior vice president of soccer operations Ali Curtis as he chases a new opportunity, the club confirmed Monday.

Curtis first joined the team in 2019, spending three seasons with Toronto. During his first year, he helped the Canadian side reach the MLS Cup as the Eastern Conference representative and inspired a playoff run in 2020.

Toronto missed out on a postseason appearance this year after sporting the second-worst record in MLS. The team also fell to rival CF Montréal in the Canadian Championship final on Sunday.

“I began discussing my future with the club in September. During the pandemic, my family moved back to the United States. After three years with Toronto FC, I am looking forward to reuniting with my wife and kids, and I am excited to take on a new professional challenge,” Curtis said in a statement.

“Toronto is a beautiful city, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to work at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, as I believe it to be among the best sports organizations in the world. There are many great people to thank at TFC and in the community.

“Those relationships transcend the workplace. Next year, there is a lot to be excited about with TFC. It has exceptional people and it is moving in an exciting direction. I wish the team, the staff, MLSE and TFC fans the very best.”

Under his leadership, Toronto brought on former head coach Chris Armas ahead of the 2021 campaign after Greg Vanney left to lead the LA Galaxy. Armas was then dismissed after 11 league games, forcing Javier Perez to take over in the meantime.

Before leading Toronto, Curtis stood as the sporting director for the New York Red Bulls. He also worked in the Major League Soccer office for eight years, holding the position of senior director of player relations and competition.

“The entire organization thanks Ali for his many contributions to the club and our community in his three seasons with Toronto FC,” TFC president Bill Manning said in a release. “Ali is a good man and we wish him all the best in the future as he pursues a new opportunity.”
