Tottenham have confirmed the loan signing of Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius for €3m, with the north London club having the option to make the deal permanent for a further €42m.

The 25-year-old signed for the Portuguese giants in July 2019 and enjoyed a successful debut campaign, scoring 24 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions.

He joins a Tottenham side who have been desperate for adequate backup for main striker Harry Kane. The likes of Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have come but none have impressed, meaning Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli have been played up front when Kane has been injured.

As announced on the club’s website, he will wear the number 45 shirt.

The Brazilian is the latest signing in Tottenham’s unexpectedly busy summer. The club previously signed midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, goalkeeper Joe Hart, wing backs Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon and forward Gareth Bale.

Vinicius started his senior career at Caldense before moving to Gremio Anapolis. A loan spell at Portuguese outfit Real Sport Clube demonstrated his scoring ability, with the forward netting nine times in 2017/18’s LigaPro.

He joined Napoli in 2018 but never played for the Serie A side, instead featuring on loan at Rio Ave and Monaco. His goals last season for Benfica fired Os Encarnados to second place in the Primeira Liga, five points behind champions Porto.
