Alcoyano vs Real Madrid An embarrassment against Alcoyano
Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey elimination comes as a blow to Zinedine Zidane‘s 2020/21 project, and one that is potentially fatal.
The loss against Segunda B side Alcoyano threatens the coach’s position at the club, with Real Madrid ending the night with Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, and Karim Benzema on the pitch.
In just six days, Real Madrid have seen their chances of two different trophies slip away, following their Supercopa de Espana semi final loss to Athletic Club. Now, all of their eggs are in the Champions League and LaLiga Santander baskets.
This latest defeat is a humiliating one for the club, and one that falls into the same category as Alcorconazo in the 2009/10 season under Manuel Pellegrini, which saw them lose 4-0 to Alcorcon.
That loss decided the Chilean’s future, with him dismissed at the end of the season, and that same fate could await Zidane, whose management of the squad has been questioned, as have the poor results the side have picked up this season.
Zidane has been on thin ice for a while now, and the biggest threat to his job before Wednesday was the Champions League, wherein Real Madrid needed a win in the last Matchday of the group stage to progress.
There’s a clear gap in the squad now. There are his first XI players, and then the backups. Those who come into the usual team aren’t up to the level that they should be, and the results are showing that.
After plenty of investment, Zidane hasn’t been able to build a squad capable of rotation. Luka Jovic has left and immediately looks a good player again, and Martin Odegaard has expressed his own desire to leave.
