Sevilla 2-0 Barcelona | Copa del Rey Another bad night for the Frenchman
Sevilla claimed a 2-0 win over Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday, and Julen Lopetegui‘s decisions proved decisive as they took advantage of the Catalans’ errors.
The Andalusians’ plan worked to perfection. They knew how to defend, Bono did what he needed to, and they targeted Samuel Umtiti as a weak link in the Barcelona team.
Ivan Rakitic‘s goal, Sevilla‘s second, clinched the win, and it would have been a sweet moment for the Croatian after being pushed out of the Camp Nou last summer.
Barcelona‘s defensive problems continue to weigh heavily on them. They were alright until Umtiti let them down for Jules Kounde to open the scoring.
Another slip from the Frenchman allowed Rakitic to get free for the second.
Ronald Koeman insisted afterwards that he chose Umtiti because of Clement Lenglet‘s problems, but he has been made to pay for his decision to play him while acknowledging that Lenglet doesn’t have a serious problem.
Kounde has no limits, and his signing looks a better piece of business the longer he’s been at Sevilla.
At just 22, he’s already a world-class defender.
Bono was at his best again. Lionel Messi went through on his goal, but the goalkeeper made himself big and pulled off an incredible save.
He denied the Argentine again later on.
Joan Jordan confirmed that he’s having a good season, both with and without the ball.
He put in another audition for the national team.
Koeman had to improvise and play Junior Firpo at right-back, but it didn’t quite work.
He barely appeared in attack, nor was he particularly impressive at the back.
