The United States faces Jamaica on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas for the quarter finals of the 2021 Gold Cup.
The USMNT sailed through the group stage as Group B leaders, but head coach Gregg Berhalter was not impressed. Though Major League Soccer players like Gianluca Busio and Daryl Dike showed their capacity and potential, Berhalter expected more of his senior squad going into the tournament after lifting the Nations League trophy.
Jamaica, on the other hand, triumphed against Guadalupe and Suriname before struggling in their first true challenge of the Gold Cup against Costa Rica. The Caribbean nation holds an advantage over the United States after proceeding to the next round with no major injuries and thus a fully fit squad for the match on Sunday.

The United States men’s national team emerged from the group stage after a 1-0 victory over North American rival Canada, gaining the lead with a record-breaking goal by Shaq Moore 20 seconds into the match.
Despite victories in the tournament’s first matches, few players have impressed head coach Berhalter and demonstrated a special capacity. Gianluca Busio and Daryl Dike are currently the two to watch out for as the young MLS players attempt to gain international attention.
The American side faced several injuries during the tournament’s group stage, but most recently lost Walker Zimmerman to a hamstring strain for the entirety of the Gold Cup. New England Revolution defender Henry Kessler and San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell are set to join the team to replace those injured.
They might enter the match against the United States as underdogs, but the Reggae Boyz should not be underestimated. The Jamaican national team cruised their way through the first two matches of the group stage, defeating Suriname and Guadalupe before struggling against Costa Rica.
The Jamaican side does not report any new injuries and should have a fit squad to face the United States on Sunday.
USA: Turner; Cannon, Sands, Robinson, Vines: Busio, Acosta, Lletget; Gioacchini, Zardes, Hoppe.
Jamaica: Barnes; Fisher, Lowe, Mariappa, Lawrence; Turgott, Williams, Johnson, Magee, Flemings; Gray.
The United States dominates against Jamaica as the Reggae Boyz look to avenge a 3-1 defeat in the 2019 Gold Cup semifinals. The Caribbean nation has yet to defeat the American side, losing again in 2017 after USMNT player Jordan Morris scored an 89-minute winner to seal the game 2-1. Their extensive Gold Cup history dates back to 2005 and 2011, where the U.S. defeated Jamaica both times during quarter finals.
This is not anticipated to be a game of few goals. Though the United States is expected to score, Jamaica will also attempt to be on the attack rather than receding to take a defensive position early on.
prediction : USA 3-1 Jamaica
