USMNT Pulisic out with injury
Pulisic, Dest, McKennie, Konrad and Gio Reyna.
One has to go back to October 2019 to find the last match Christian Pulisic played with the United States national team. It was a match to forget, since it was the historic 2-0 defeat to Canada, the first time that their northern rival had beaten the Yankee side in 34 years.
And now, 13 months later, U.S. fans will have to wait a good while longer to see their star on the pitch. This past Wednesday the news broke that the Chelsea attacker will not play in the friendlies versus Wales and Panama and will return to London to continue his recuperation from the hamstring injury he suffered last October 31.
Pulisic will not be able to play with his new national team teammates, like forward Giovanni Reyna, Valencia winger Yunus Musah and full-back Sergino Dest, among others, in this new stable of footballers that is giving hope to the entire U.S., with all of them being 25 or younger and in top European clubs.
Pulisic’s absence forces everyone to have to wait and see if a chemistry exists among the stars in the new ‘Team USA’. And if the fixtures list is not modified, the debut of the new and improved Team USA won’t be until the Concacaf Nations League semifinals.
The next match that the U.S. national team has scheduled, assuming that the federation does not schedule a friendly during the March FIFA window, is in June against Honduras in the Nations League semifinals, followed days later by the start of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022.
One must take into account the importance of the year 2021 for the national team. There will be the Nations League, Concacaf Gold Cup and the start of World Cup Qualifying. For the United States it is crucial that they are able to rely on their biggest star, but if Pulisic continues suffering injuries, it is possible that this group could never live up to its potential.
