Real Madrid – La Liga Was about to be replaced against Getafe
Zinedine Zidane‘s risky decision to move Vinicius Junior to right wing-back in the 55th minute of Real Madrid’s match against Getafe paid dividends, as the Brazilian put in an excellent cross for Karim Benzema to open the scoring for Los Blancos.
The French coach replaced youngster Marvin Park with another academy product, Sergio Arribas, and moved Vinicius to the right flank just before the hour mark.
Although Zidane had planned to sub off the Brazilian forward, Marvin asked to be replaced after feeling some discomfort.
Up to that moment, Vinicius had barely contributed up front and Getafe tried to benefit from his change in position when Marc Cucurella was left unmarked in the box, but the former Barcelona left-back failed to convert.
Just one minute later, Vinicius received the ball on the right flank and produced a precise cross which was headed home by Benzema.
In just 60 seconds, the 20-year-old went from being singled out in defence to setting up Real Madrid‘s first goal.
Vinicius had not participated in any Real Madrid goal since the game against Athletic Club back on December 15, when he teed up Toni Kroos.
However, the last time he set up Benzema was back on February 13, 2019, away at Ajax, when Vinicius put in one of his best performances as a Real Madrid player.
The Brazilian forward dribbled past three Ajax players, including centre-backs Daley Blind and Matthijs de Ligt, before playing a simple pass for Benzema to fire home.
Against Getafe, Vinicius produced his fourth assist to Benzema in the 83 games the two men have coincided on the pitch.
This was the first time he teed up the French striker in LaLiga Santander, with the other two assists coming in a Copa del Rey match against Girona.
