Virgil van Dijk admits Premier League title is Man City’s to lose

Virgil van Dijk has admitted that the Premier League title is Manchester City’s to lose after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea left Pep Guardiola’s side ten points clear at the top of the table.

The Reds raced into a two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, before Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic netted in quick succession just before the break to level up the scores.

Liverpool had chances to win the game in the second half but could not beat Edouard Mendy a third time, meaning the game ended all square.

The result did neither side any favours in the Premier League title race with Van Dijk conceding at full time that City must be considered heavy favourites.

“It is never difficult to believe [that Liverpool can catch Man City],” he told Sky Sports after the game.

“It is a big gap so they have the title maybe to lose at the moment but anything can happen still.

“Fortunately we have been there where we have had a gap, we were in front, and then we gave it away so anything is possible.

“We will focus on ourselves, Chelsea we will focus on themselves and we just have to get results, play good football and win games. It sounds pretty easy but it is tough as you have seen today.”

Liverpool were hit with a triple blow before the game with Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip all testing positive for Covid-19. Jurgen Klopp was also unable to attend the fixture after returning his own positive test earlier in the week.

The foursome are all likely to be missing for Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal but they could be back in contention for Shrewsbury in the FA Cup next Sunday.
