Wayne Rooney retires as a player and is named Derby's permanent head coach

One of the truly great playing careers of the modern era came to an end on January 15, 2021, as Wayne Rooney was officially appointed Derby County‘s full-time head coach.

Having been a veteran player at Pride Park, he was standing in as interim head coach following the dismissal of Phillip Cocu but has now been given the job on a permanent basis.

Derby County are delighted to confirm the hiring of Wayne Rooney as the club’s new head coach,” a club statement read.

“The 35-year-old coach is taking the step forward with a two-and-a-half-year contract that will run until the summer of 2023.”

Rooney now faces the unenviable task of avoiding relegation from the Championship, with the club currently sat in 19th position.

His first game in complete control will come on Saturday in what is already being billed as a relegation six-pointer, with Rotherham sat just one point behind the Rams in the standings.
