Wesley Fofana confirms leg break suffered in pre-season friendly

Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana has confirmed he fractured his fibula during Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Villarreal in pre-season.

The French defender was caught by a nasty challenge from Fernando Niño midway through the second half and immediately looked to be in serious pain.

Fofana needed oxygen on the pitch and was then stretchered off and taken to hospital, where he confirmed the severity of the injury on Twitter.

“Hello guys, many thanks for all your messages,” he wrote. “It is a bad day today but I am in a tremendous club with a wonderful medical team.

“I will give you news as a soon as I have a final diagnosis but we already know that I have a fibula fracture. I will come back soon and stronger.

“Do not worry, I am a warrior.”

To rub salt in the wounds for Leicester, Niño somehow avoided a red card and then went on to score in the game, although it was not enough to prevent the Foxes from earning the victory.

It’s obviously too soon to come up with a return date for Fofana, but what is clear is that he is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines which may well force manager Brendan Rodgers to dip his toe into the transfer market to find a replacement.

As it stands, Leicester have Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans and Filip Benkovic as their senior centre-backs, with right-back Timothy Castagne filling in centrally at times last season. Evans is battling a foot injury and is likely to miss both the Community Shield and Premier League opener against Wolves on August 14, so Rodgers will know replacements are necessary.

Schalke’s Ozan Kabak has previously been named as a potential signing, while Burnley’s James Tarkowski could be signed as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at Turf Moor.
