Real Madrid – La Liga Santiago Siguero gives his opinion
It is not a question of money, because in this matter, with Paris Saint-Germain involved, money is out of the question. The pandemic-affected Real Madrid cannot compete with the Qatari shark. If Nasser Al-Khelaifi pulls out the chequebook, Florentino Perez‘s wallet will look like Alan Harper’s in ‘Two and a Half Men’: a dusty wrapper, empty of the content needed to bend wills.
The question is to go beyond money, even taking into account that Kylian Mbappe would not come to Real Madrid only with expenses paid and mileage to Valdebebas. Because there are two things that Real Madrid can offer the striker that, as things stand, are in question in Paris. The first, and almost basic, is history, prestige and tradition, three ingredients that money cannot buy for the huge Parisian project. Real Madrid are the club with 13 Champions League trophies, and behind them there is a wasteland. They are also the club that turned Cristiano Ronaldo, Mbappe‘s big idol, into a legend of cosmic proportions. If he were to arrive at Real Madrid, he would not be able to play alongside his hero, but he would be designated, without argument, as his heir apparent.
Because, and this must be another trump card in Real Madrid‘s favour, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu would proclaim him as the figurehead of this new project which, for one reason or another, is not quite coming together at La Castellana. Eden Hazard has not been able to lead the transition and players like Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema are further from the epilogue than the prologue. In Paris, with Neymar as Sun King and the tempting lure of Lionel Messi on the ownership horizon, he would not, at least in the short term, enjoy such a preeminent position. And in keeping with his personal ambitions, too.
So the ball is in the hands of the footballer, who between honour and money can choose the former, contrary to what the proverbial saying goes. Real Madrid bring as standard the ‘grandeur’ to which PSG aspire, and the job includes absolute command on the pitch. At the very least, it should give food for thought.
