Opinion – Barcelona The opinion of David Sanchez
The Supercopa de Espana final confirmed what this Barcelona team really is. If Marc-Andre ter Stegen is human after all and not the goalkeeper we saw in the semi-final then they’re a plain and dull team without the attitude that should go with their favourites tag. It’s a sad thing that is summed up by substitutions, with Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, Trincao and Oscar Mingueza. That’s what this team is, nothing more.
There’s also Ronald Koeman‘s cowardly and crappy planning, as much in his team selection as with his tactics. But especially with his substitutions. He made ultra-defensive changes to preserve the lead that they were incapable of preserving. Koeman is the main culprit for this Supercopa failing.
Then there’s Lionel Messi. There’s no evident excuse for his red card, but, if I put myself in his shoes, surrounded by so much mediocrity and laziness, I’d probably lose the plot and get sent off like he did.
Congratulations to Athletic Club and prayers to Barcelona and their fans. The players should apologise for making the supporters embarrassed and ashamed of their team once more.
