FC Barcelona – La Liga Contract runs until June
Pablo Zabaleta believes that his former Argentina teammate Lionel Messi would be a great fit for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The former Sky Blues right-back is confident that the Barcelona captain, whose contract runs until June and who has yet to renew with the Blaugrana, will adapt quickly to the Premier League side.
“Leo has been in LaLiga for so many years and I think it would be a huge attraction for him to experience English football,” Zabaleta told Sunday Mirror Sport.
“And Manchester City offer the perfect conditions. He knows Pep very well, he knows [sporting director] Txiki Begiristain and [chief executive] Ferran Soriano and also [Sergio] Aguero.
“It would be a big decision if Leo leaves Barcelona. But if that’s what he wants then it would be a good thing for him to go to a club that has people already there who can help him to settle.
“When you have been at one club for so long, moving somewhere new can be very strange.
“I am sure clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus would also be interested in signing him, but it is my opinion that City would be the best place to go after Barcelona.”
Zabaleta also expressed his surprise that the poor decisions of the previous Barcelona board led Messi to request to be released by the club last summer.
“I never thought we would ever see a situation where Leo would not want to be a Barcelona player,” Zabaleta added.
“I think it’s ridiculous that Barcelona could make so many mistakes that he would ever feel unhappy to be part of that club.
“I would like to see Messi finish his career with Barcelona and even Pep has said he hopes he stays. But there is a situation at the club that’s now made it very hard for him.
“It will be interesting to see what happens with the presidential election. Maybe the new president will convince Leo to stay because I know his family is really settled in Barcelona.
“But if he decides to leave, I would love to see him at City.”
