Real Madrid are likely to be without Karim Benzema when they travel to take on Atalanta on Wednesday.

The Frenchman missed out as Los Blancos narrowly beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday, and Zinedine Zidane insisted afterwards that they wouldn’t rush the No.9 back into action.

“We’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Zidane said after the game on Saturday. “I can’t tell you [what will happen].

“We’re not going to risk him. If he can’t play, he won’t be with us.”

Zidane had to do without as many as nine first-team players on Saturday through injury, and Isco was the only recognised outfield first-team player on the bench.

“The situation is what it is,” Zidane said. “There are a lot of injuries.

“I hope the players recover, but I don’t know about next week.

“At the moment we have a lot of injuries, but the players we have are committed and we’ll continue with them. It’s complicated, but you have to keep going.”

In the absence of Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema, Casemiro stepped up with an impressive showing, and even scored the winner.

“We know how good a player he is,” Zidane said. “We know the positions he takes up.

“We know that he shoots, and that he’s able to score.

“I’m happy, but I’m happy for the whole team.”

Given the circumstances, the Frenchman was happy to return to Valdebebas with a win.

“We have to be happy with the game, with the result and with the clean sheet.”
