Zinedine Zidane provides update on Sergio Ramos’ Real Madrid future

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has confessed he is unsure if Sergio Ramos will remain at the club beyond this summer.

The Spain international’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the season, with various reports suggesting he’s unwilling to sign a new deal as he would be required to take a pay cut due to Real looking to balance the books amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with a move for Ramos, with the legendary defender doing little to reassure fans he would remain at Real after he confirmed there was no further news regarding a renewed deal.

Zidane has confirmed he too is in the dark over the defender’s future, though he reiterated his desire to keep Ramos at the club.

“I want to be honest and I have to say I don’t know what’s going to happen with him,” Zidane told reporters (via Goal)

“We want him to stay here. He’s always going to be an important player and I want him to remain here, that’s what I’ll say as a coach. Will Ramos play until he’s 40? That is what Sergio has said. He is a special player. His intention is already good because he wants to continue playing.

“Every year he will know if he is in good shape and, if he is like he is now, of course he can play until he is 40, if he wants.”

Ramos isn’t the only Real defender whose future in the Spanish capital has been called into question of late, with World Cup winning defender Raphael Varane also mooted to be on the wish list of a number of European behemoths.

United are yet again credited with an interest, but Zidane refused to be drawn on the speculation when asked about the possibility of Varane leaving the club, simply replying: “I don’t think he thinks about clubs other than Real Madrid.”

Real’s continued pursuit of soon-to-be free agent David Alaba could have a huge bearing on the future of either Ramos or Varane, with the Bayern Munich man’s bumper wages potentially meaning one of the pair could be forced out of the club if Madrid land the Austrian defender.
