Brad Guzan out for Atlanta United after suffering Achilles injury

Atlanta United added another name to their injury report after goalkeeper Brad Guzan went down in the 71st minute of their match against FC Cincinnati.

While no official diagnosis has been provided, head coach Gonzalo Pineda described it as an Achilles injury.

“I don’t want to talk about the details about the injury, but it doesn’t look good,” Pineda said.

“That’s why I’m sad, it’s not about the result or the performance, it’s about Brad’s injury. I have to wait for the scans and tests that they are going to do. No, it was not a knee injury, it was an Achilles injury.

The goalkeeper was replaced mid-match by veteran Bobby Shuttleworth, who joined Atlanta United during the offseason to add depth to the squad.

This is a huge blow for Atlanta United as Guzan stands as one of their most experienced on the field, after stints with Hull City, Middlesbrough and 64 appearances with the US men’s national team.

“Brad is our captain, our leader, our heartbeat,” defender Andrew Gutman said.

“It didn’t look good on the field obviously. We don’t know what the scans will be, but it’s a huge loss for us. He’s such a fantastic player, fantastic guy but we just have to support him throughout this whole process. He’s had such a great career and it can’t end like this and we just have to keep pushing him through and come back even stronger.”

He now joines Matheus Rossetto, Osvaldo Alonso, Dylan Castanheira, Machop Chol and most notably Josef Martinez on the sidelines. The star striker has been ruled out for weeks after undergoing successful knee surgery.

Despite the long list, Gonzalo Pineda has kept Atlanta United afloat. The team currently sits in fourth on the Eastern Conference table with 11 points in seven games and a record of 3-2-2.
