Lionel Messi: Argentina manager has ‘no words’ after historic five-goal haul

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confessed that he has run out of words to describe Lionel Messi after he scored five goals in the 5-0 win over Estonia to climb into fourth in the all-time scoring charts for international men’s football.

Messi bagged two in the first half and three after the break and now sits on 86 goals for his country, moving above the 84 scored by Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas.

He now sits behind only Malaysia’s Mokhtar Dahari (89), Iran’s Ali Daei (109) and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (117).

“I don’t know what else to say about Leo, it’s very difficult,” Scaloni said after the game. “He’s like Rafa Nadal, what more can you say?

“I’ll let the journalists speak. I have no words left to describe him and, above all, for everything he does. He is unique and it is a pleasure to have him, to coach him… his behaviour and how he works for this shirt.

“I only have words of thanks for Leo, he is not a legend of Argentina but of world football. The day he does not play anymore, we will miss him.

“I hope he continues playing and everyone enjoys it, because it is a pleasure to see him play.”

Messi, who added two assists in his side’s 3-0 thumping of Italy last week, took to Instagram after the Estonia game to sign off for the season.

“We couldn’t close the season better,” he wrote. “We won the Finalissima and today we added more minutes preparing for the World Cup.

“Thanks to everyone who came to the stadium and to those who follow us from a distance. We’re going to rest for a few days and we’ll be back very soon!”
